2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Follows Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our fans.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all eager to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can look forward to more updates as production advances.
